Summary

  • Pimp My Ride refused to work on a Ford Fairlane owned by a college-bound mechanic due to the extensive repairs it needed.
  • Instead, the show surprised the owner with a brand new 2005 Toyota 4Runner, which they pimped out with new paint, rims, audio/video systems, and a laptop.
  • While the Ford Fairlane was left untouched, Pimp My Ride made up for it by giving the owner a hot new ride and leaving him happy with the show's outcome.

Ever wondered if there ever was a car that MTV’s hit show, Pimp My Ride hosted by Xzibit, ever gave up on. David Patterson, the man behind the YouTube channel ThatDudeinBlue had the same thoughts. So instead of just wondering about it, he decided to do some research and found a Ford that even Pimp My Ride refused to touch with a barge pole.

Pimp My Ride Refused To Pimp Out A Ford Fairlane

In episode 23 of Pimp My Ride, the last one in Season 2, 19-year-old West has a Ford Fairlane that’s so bad, it's taped up in places. It was perhaps the worst car seen on Pimp My Ride and that’s saying something. When the episode aired, in 2005, the car was already 41 years old, and finding parts could not have been easy.

While the show pimped out a storyline as to why they did not do work on this American automotive icon, the Ford Fairlane, Patterson feels the reason was different. First, he talks about West, who was about to go to college and become a mechanic and loved old cars. While West wanted to restore the Fairlane, he was, as Patterson put it, way in over his head given he paid $2,000 for this car, in 2004.

There was an incredible amount of dust and grime buildup on the car, and West had taped down the hood because anything above 60 mph made the hood fly off and destroy everything. He needs a new engine but knows nothing about how to fix it, and the insides of the Fairlane are just as bad as the outside. It’s called “The Fuzz” because it had this printed on the side and yes, parts including the wheel rims were suspiciously fuzzy.

Xzibit shows up, takes the car from West, and drives it to Pimp My Ride. Back then, it was West Coast Customs who pimped the cars, and it took them less than a minute to give up on the car. While the story ran differently (read below to know), this Fairlane needed too much work to be viable. Sometimes, an old car is just an old one and needs retirement, so the show did that. Instead, they pimped out a brand new, 2005 Toyota 4Runner for West!

Why Did Pimp My Ride Not Fix The Ford Fairlane?

As per the Pimp My Ride story, seeing that West wanted to go to college to become a mechanic, West Coast Customs left the Ford Fairlane as is, for West to fix himself, taking it on as a project.

Seeing that West still needed a ride though, and both Pimp My Ride and West Coast Customs never disappointed. Xzibit drove in a brand new 2005 Toyota 4Runner into the garage and WCC got to work on it to give West a hot new ride.

Many felt, as they stated in the comments section, that Toyota might have tied up with the show for a promotion. But WCC didn’t just hand in the brand-new Toyota without pimping it first.

They added in new paint and rims, put in the best audio, video, and security system they could find, and even put in a 10-inch monitor under the car to view “how-to” videos, seeing that West was heading to be a mechanic. Finally, Xzibit also gifted West a brand new Sony Vaio laptop. So, while the show sidelined the Ford Fairlane, Pimp My Ride more than made up for it to its owner, who left the show a happy camper. Wonder what happened to that Ford Fairlane though…
