The 2000 remake of Gone in 60 Seconds was as successful as the 1974 original. That one was made on a shoestring and then proceeded to kill it at the box office, making $40 million on a $150,000 investment. The Touchstone Pictures movie, financed by Disney, had a $100 million budget. Not bad considering A-listers Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie starred alongside a fleet of high-end cars. Gone In 60 Seconds was an excellent remake that has earned its spot amongst the greatest car movies of all time. It’s the perfect mix of gearhead-centric dialog with enough everyday car slang to keep any action movie enthusiast entertained. Both movies showcase some of the best long haul car chase scenes that ever roared across the screen. Gone In 60 Seconds (2000) was the number one movie at the box office when it opened on June 9, 2000, edging out Mission Impossible 2. All said, it grossed $237.2 million.
