The Ferrari Film Plot Tells of The Company’s Financial Crisis

The film, directed by Michael Mann, stars Adam Driver as the great man and Penélope Cruz and Shailene Woodley as his wife, Laura. In it, the scene is set in 1957, at a time when the company was badly threatened by bankruptcy. This threatened to shut down the entire operation and the factory that Ferrari and his wife had built ten years earlier. The trailer shows the marriage of the pair, which is also described as volatile, while it also shows them dealing with the loss of their son Dino in 1956.

Dino Ferrari was the first son of Enzo, and was sadly diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and died tragically at the age of just 24. Dino would be responsible for some of Ferrari’s best achievements, including the 750 Monza racing car, and he also had a hand in the 1.5-ltier V6 Ferrari Dino engine. It is an engine that Dino sadly would never see with him dying in June 1956. The film will tackle this issue, and showcase the grief that Enzo and his wife felt following Dino’s death.

The death of Dino is not the only issue that the film deals with. Enzo had another son, Piero, with his mistress, Lina Lardi. Throughout the film, Enzo struggles to acknowledge the son he had with Lina, which divides the family and adds more drama to their situation. Throughout all of this, Ferrari is attempting to deal with the financial issues facing his company and he can best deal with them. At this point, Ferrari had already won three Formula 1 drivers titles, but even that wasn’t seemingly enough to keep the business afloat. Formula 1 wasn’t the only series Ferrari competed in at the time, with it also racing in sports cars.

In 1957, Ferrari was one of a huge number of entries to that year's Mille Miglia. The Mille Miglia was one of the most famous road races in the world, held on public roads around Italy for a distance of 992 miles. For those not wanting to know what happened, then look away, but Ferrari would secure a 1-2-3 finish that year. Piero Taruffi won the event in his Ferrari 315 S, with Wolfgang von Trips finishing second in the race in his own 315 S. Olivier Gendebien with Jaques Washer would finish third, driving a Ferrari 250 GT LWB Scaglietti.

The 1957 race is a focus point of the film as Ferrari attempts to turn its fortunes around. The film trailer describes the event as where Ferraris drivers will push themselves to the limits, thanks to the passion that they have for Ferrari and the company. The event is also shown off in incredible detail, with a huge array of classic cars to form the entrants as well as the various settings and weather conditions that the drivers would have to contend with in the race. The Mille Miglia earned a reputation as one of the most fearsome road races in the world.

The film also looks to deal with the dangers of racing, with a fiery accident in Formula 1 making the story which showcases how dangerous and intimidating motorsport was in the late 1950s. The financial crisis that Ferrari is in will loom large in the film, as Enzo and his team attempt to turn their fortunes around. The financial issues Ferrari faced are a far cry from the company we know today, which regularly produces some of the best and most revered supercars in the world.

The Ferrari Film Follows On From The Lamborghini Biopic

The film of Ferrari follows on from the 2022 film Lamborghini: The Man Behind The Legend. This epic starred Frank Grillo as Lamborghini and Gabreli Byrne as Enzo Ferrari. It tells the tale of Lamborghini and how he came to set up his own car company, displeased with the products that Ferrari produced at the time. The clutch was an area that Lamborghini was really disappointed in, as well as the lack of a quality interior within the Ferrari cars, so he decided to go it alone and move from making tractors, to making fast cars.

The Lamborghini film has had mixed reviews since its launch in 2022, with the average IMDB rating for the biopic just 5.4/10, so hopefully, the Ferrari film does better at the box office than Lamborghini did. Comparing the plots of the two films, the Ferrari movie delves into more personal matters for the main protagonists, with it highlighting the family drama within Ferrari and how the loss of Dino led to personal tragedy. The Lamborghini film is perhaps more about the company and its creation, and one of its focus points is the rivalry between Ferrari and Lamborghini.

The trailer states that the new Ferrari film is coming to theaters this Christmas. Remarkably for a movie trailer, there is nearly no dialogue, with only one line being uttered by Ferrari at the end of the trailer. Everything we see in the trailer suggests that the Ferrari film will be an incredibly emotional affair, and one that showcases how the iconic company was able to turn itself around. Ferrari is one of the most recognizable car companies and brands in the world, and its story will be fascinating to witness on the big screen.
